A 'leaf' was taken from a moss (from the gametophyte stage) and viewed by brightfield microscopy. Moss leaves are only one cell thick and consist of an array of regularly shaped cells. The lighter area in the centre of the cells is the vacuole, which is an aqueous storage compartment, and the darker green organelles around the edges of the cells are the chloroplasts which capture light energy in order to photosynthesise.
